We are happy to announce that Errant Journal is working on a renewed website where we will also start publishing articles in open access. To help launch the website, Errant has a new open call for a limited series of texts. This series intends to delve deeper into what it means to work, write, and publish ‘anti-colonially’. More specifically, what it means to be ‘errant’, and critically subvert standardized methods of knowledge production while still using the basic structures (website, text, language). Besides addressing related topics from different localities and epistemologies, Errant is interested in examples that can offer practical tips and concrete considerations that can be used to influence and change cultural discourse and the ways we think and write knowledge.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to:
- Examples of subverting the English language as the lingua franca of ‘official knowledge’ (productive mistakes, mistranslations, and misunderstandings).
- Non-western knowledge production and how to translate them, or not.
- Slang, pidgin, and accent in critical thinking.
- Oral traditions
- Lexicons that transcend western knowledge systems
- How to write crip, queer, or creole?
Proposal:
Because it is Errant´s aim to give form to a pluriversal world, we resolutely reject the idea of a universal way of knowing emanating from a neutral or ‘universal’ perspective. Instead, we look for contributions that are concretely situated, personal, specific, etc. and from all possible backgrounds, disciplines, and/or embodied knowledges. You do not have to be an academic or an experienced writer, and we especially look for and welcome contributions that come from non-western epistemologies. Errant mostly publishes essays but is open to other forms. Errant does not publish exhibition reviews.
Submission:
Proposals should be submitted through this form. We ask for a 300 word proposal, a sample of your work, and a short bio. The contribution can be written by as many people as you want, but note that the fee is per contribution, not per person. We ask you to only hand in one proposal per person or duo/group. You are also welcome to propose existing texts but please note that the fee only applies for newly written texts.
NOTE: there is no deadline for this call. We’ll be accepting proposals on a rolling basis and close the call after the (limited!) budget for ten texts is allocated. Due to the high number of submissions we receive and the very small team, we are unable to respond to every submission or provide feedback. If you have not heard back from us within 1 month, please consider your submission unsuccessful. We aim to start publishing contributions on our new website by October/November 2025.
We aim for ten texts of max. 4000 words. Contributors publishing new material especially created for Errant receive a fee of € 500,- incl. VAT per contribution upon acceptance and publication. The editor is free to reject contributions after they have been written if they do not fit the editorial framework, deviate significantly from what was discussed/agreed upon, or if the quality is considered sub-par.
Questions about this open call can be sent to: info@errantjournal.org (but please make sure you’ve read the call properly before you reach out).
This series of texts is kindly supported by the Mondriaan Fund.
