Max Ring (1817–1901) was a German physician, novelist, poet, and dramatist. While Ring’s lyrical, narrative and dramatic works quickly fell into oblivion after his death, his works about Berlin – sketches, feuilletons, books on local history and the history of the city – have been able to retain significant cultural and historical value to this day. His comprehensive book Die Deutsche Kaiserstadt Berlin (The German Imperial City of Berlin) was reprinted in 1987 and published in both East and West Germany. His memoirs, published in 1898, offer a valuable contribution to the history of literature and culture of the 19th century – especially for the history of Berlin literature.
